A small village in the department of Quiché, lost in the middle of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, Santa Maria Nebaj - as it is known - doesn't attract tourists for its activities or archaeological sites, but for its calm, welcoming population, authenticity, small market and, above all, its magnificent alpine landscapes, to be discovered on walks and excursions. The ancient white village of adobe houses has had to accommodate a new, denser population, but while many buildings have sprung up here and there without any real architectural concern, the Mayan soul is perceptible in every place.
