It alone justifies a detour to Baja Verapaz. Located 40 km northwest of Salamá and 55 km southeast of Cobán, this 1,017-hectare biotope was created in 1976. Objective: to protect and conserve the cloud forest. Among the wide variety of species, amphibians and birds it contains, its luxuriant tropical vegetation is home to the legendary quetzal. The area is also considered the birthplace of the superb Monja Blanca orchid, the national flower.
