Straddling the departments of Chiquimula and Jutiapa and 50 km by road southwest of Chiquimula, Volcán de Ipala rises to an altitude of 1,650 m. Along with Chicabal, in Quetzaltenango, it is one of the two Guatemalan volcanoes that have a lake in its crater, and the only one where swimming is allowed. In addition, Ipala was declared a protected area in 1996.Several thousand years ago, a pyroclastic explosion would have caused the collapse of its upper dome, creating a gigantic basin that the rains have filled over time
