In the heart of the mountain range that marks the eastern part of the country, 25 km south of Zacapa, lies Chiquimula, a traditional city far from the main tourist routes. Originally inhabited by the Ch'orti' Maya, its territory was known as the Kingdom of Chiquimuljá, or Payaquí, whose capital was Compantí, the current Copán. Today, Chiquimula is considered one of the oldest cities in Guatemala and is the capital of the department of the same name. It is an important traffic junction and a place where tourists do not stay, continuing their journey to Esquipulas and, above all, to the Honduran border
