Facing the sea, Errenteria and its 40,000 inhabitants is a town with a maritime tradition, whose development began in the 13th century. From then on, it became an important commercial and industrial area, as evidenced by its port and shipyards, which then turned to the timber trade. At the time, it was nicknamed "Little Manchester" because of the factory fumes. The historical centre of Errenteria has kept some beautiful buildings, however, massive industrialisation has somewhat deteriorated the town.
