A village of barely 200 souls, Saint-Pierre-aux-Ifs takes its name from the association of Saint-Pierre, the first bishop of Rome, and yew trees, conifers that were very much in evidence in the Normandy of yesteryear. Over the centuries, Saint-Pierre-aux-Ifs became Saint-Pierre-Azif. Its church, flanked by a 12th-century Lombard tower, houses an astonishing collection of nine paintings by the Flemish school. The collection is the work of Jean-Pierre Le Chanteur. Born in Saint-Pierre-Azif in 1760, this naval secretary collected these works during his career in Antwerp. Finally, for literary enthusiasts, George Sand's tale Les ailes de courage is set in the Saint-Pierre-Azif region.
