The capital of the Bessin region is a proud medieval town on the doorstep of the D-Day landing beaches. One of the first towns on the French mainland to be liberated in June 1944, it was also an important Gallo-Roman center in antiquity: Augustodurum. Today, with its rich heritage, Bayeux doesn't aim to be a museum town, even if some of its attractions (most notably the Tapestry Museum) and its cathedral are not to be missed. The atmosphere is gentle, a subtle blend of provincial calm and year-round entertainment. Don't miss the market every Saturday in Place Saint-Patrice, where you can meet all the local producers and craftsmen.
