Between Southampton and Bournemouth, the New Forest National Park stretches for 566 km. Officially declared a park in 2005, this forest was proclaimed royal as early as the 11th century and today represents the remnants of a once much larger natural area. Sheep, horses and ponies frolic in the heather. Discover the area on foot or by bike, and enjoy the picturesque villages, of which Lymington is the largest, with its harbour and winding lanes. To take full advantage of the hiking trails, the Ordnance Survey Explorer Map OL 22 New Forest may prove useful. The main tourist office is in Lyndhurst.
