Winchester was founded by the Romans, who wanted to take advantage of its proximity to the River Itchen. A few centuries later, Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, made it the capital of his kingdom. In 1043, Edward the Confessor was crowned and, after his victory in 1066, William the Conqueror had the original Saxon palace rebuilt (no longer in existence). Sovereigns continued to stay in the city throughout the Middle Ages, a period of commercial expansion thanks to the wool industry. When London became the capital in the 16th century, Winchester withdrew from the limelight. Today, it's a charming provincial town.
