A former Roman garrison town, known as "Isca", founded by Augustine's second legion in 75 AD. Today, the town abounds in Roman remains: Roman baths and spas, campsites and, above all, the amphitheatre, the only one so well preserved in Britain. King Arthur is said to have held his council here: the famous "Round Table" of Arthurian knights. To reach the site by car from Newport, follow the B4596 for around 5 km after crossing the bridge over the River Usk. Cardiff is 40 minutes from Caerleon by bus. From Newport, busnumbers 27 and 28 drop you off at Caerleon in 15 minutes.
