The town of Windsor, located on the banks of the River Thames to the west of London in Berkshire, is of course famous for its medieval-style Windsor Castle, built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and from which today's reigning royal family descends. This is where Queen Elizabeth II used to spend her weekends. It's an easy day trip and a must-see for any self-respecting fan of the Royal Family. The castle can be visited all year round. The surrounding town is also well worth a visit, with its typical English charm and the opportunity to stroll along the River Thames.
