Buckler's Hard, a small 18th-century village, made its name mainly by building warships, notably for Nelson's fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. Charming period cottages have been reconstructed here, while the Maritime Museum and Buckler's Hard Story tell the story of the place. It was a free port for trade with the West Indies, and had access to a protected, navigable waterway. Today, the hamlet is mainly devoted to tourism, and its history is open to visitors.
