At the crossroads of five rivers and a bishopric since the 13th century, Salisbury grew considerably in medieval times. As early as 1220, the construction of the cathedral and the resulting need for manpower boosted the population. It received its town charter in 1227, allowing guilds of craftsmen and merchants to establish themselves and trade, particularly in wool. Today, this beautiful historic city attracts many tourists, enchanted by its architectural charm, its parks and its peaceful atmosphere. The cathedral is the town's main attraction, and inspired John Constable on several occasions.
