It is the most important centre of the Valtiberina, a region to the north-east of Arezzo, parallel to the Casentino, and enclosed to the west by the Catenaia Alps and to the east by the Luna Alps. It borders Umbria and is also crossed by the Tiber. The landscape of hills, chestnut trees and pastures is rich in artistic references from the Renaissance. It was here that Cosimo I had a fortress built and that Piero della Francesca, a painter known for his perspectives, was born in 1416. Sansepolcro is rich in stately palaces of various periods and styles. For orientation, the piazza Torre di Berta is the hub of the town.
