The islet of Virginia, in the middle of the lake of Varese, is an opportunity to have a good lunch in the restaurant of local specialties on the spot and to enjoy a pleasant walk during a sunny afternoon. A small chapel stood here in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the island changed owners many times until it became the property of the City of Varese in the 1960s. Recent excavations have revealed the remains of a prehistoric settlement. Archaeological studies attest to the presence of a village on stilts around 3,500 BC. The pieces found are exhibited in a small museum on the island.
