Sarzana has always occupied an important strategic, economic and political position. The construction of powerful ramparts dates back to the 13th century, an essential barrier against attacks from neighboring powers. The main square took several centuries to build (11th-16th centuries). It is bordered by elegant palaces dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. Although Sarzana suffered from bombing during the Second World War, the historic center, which runs alongside the ancient Via Francigena linking northern Europe to Rome, has been preserved. The lively, touristy Via Mazzini is a great place for shopping, and Thursday is market day!
