This town, close to the airport, lies at the bottom of a fjord that bears its name, from where ferries leave for Mykines. Sørvágur translates as "Sør's Bay". Legend has it that the first inhabitant was called Sørli. For others, Sør comes from the Old Norse Seyr which means "misty rain". Indeed, the winters are colder and snowier than in most other parts of the archipelago. Lower temperatures and snow cover can even be observed - a rarity in the Faroes.
