From Øravík, a dead-end road leads to this small village, which must be seen in the evening at sunset. The light that bathes this place attracts painters from all over the world. The creator of the Faroese flag, Merkið, lived in Fámjin. His grave is opposite the entrance to the church, where the first flag of the archipelago, made in 1919, is kept under glass. It was first legally flown in 1940, with the permission of the British, as Denmark was occupied by the Nazis. After the war, when the archipelago acquired its autonomous status, it was allowed to keep its flag.
