With its 4,900 inhabitants, it is the second largest city of the archipelago. It is enclosed along the harbor which spreads out on both sides of a narrow isthmus, hence its name: klakkur which means "cliff" and vík "bay". It is the largest fishing port in the Faroes and an industrial center that grew exponentially throughout the 20th century (the population increased eightfold in 80 years), before being hit hard by the fishing crisis of the 1990s. A must-see in Klaksvík is the family brewery Föroya Bjór founded in 1888 with a ram as its emblem. The loop road gives it a strange geography.
