North of Gullfoss, the F35 road crosses Iceland's interior between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull icecaps, via the Kjölur plateau, a stony desert surrounded by icy mountains. It can be dangerous for an ordinary car. So it's best to drive a 4×4 with a high, protected chassis, or take the bus. The bus stops 8 km from Hvítárnes. This site is therefore reserved for hardy cyclists or stubborn walkers who will have to cover the 8 km on foot. The Hvítá river, on which Gullfoss stands, rises in Hvítárvatn, a large pale-blue lake into which a tongue of the Langjökull, a 953 km² ice cap, has been wedged.
