Located 12 kilometers south-west of Thira, this is one of Santorini's must-see sites. The site of Akrotiri alone represents proof of the presence of the ancient Minoan population. The town was largely destroyed by a volcanic eruption and covered by a thick layer of ash around 1500 BC. The town is also famous for its Red Beach. The Greek word Akrotiri means "cape", precisely because the village is the last on the caldera to the south. Along with Oia, it is the only village with drinking water. Its inhabitants are nicknamed "the capers" because of the density of their crops.
