This is the only place on the island to have retained its medieval character. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. It is literally perched in the mountains, perpendicular to the sea. Some of its streets are formed by terraced houses, making it resemble an amphitheatre. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the site still boasts a few ancient columns embedded in the houses, the ruins of the fortified wall that protected it from pirates and several magnificent Byzantine churches. You can also go for a swim: just climb down the steps to Seralia, a coarse pebble beach.
