It was here, in the ancient city of Ioulis, that the poets Simonides and Bacchylides were born in the5th century BC. Located 5.5 km from Korissia, the island's capital boasts red-tiled neoclassical houses, numerous fountains and steep alleyways built amphitheatrically into the hillsides. The car-free city center is particularly quiet during the week and comes alive at weekends with its many trendy bars and restaurants frequented by wealthy Athenians. Don't be surprised if you hear Ioulis, Ioulida, Ioulides or Chora referred to as the main village of Kea.
