The Chora of Folegandros is one of the most beautiful villages of the Cyclades, if not the most beautiful, quite simply. Perched on the ridge of the island, in unstable balance on a cliff and ready to fall at any moment in the void, the Chora seems to resist the natural elements, in all its candor with its bright whiteness contrasting with the blue of the Aegean Sea that extends everywhere. The village seems to be under the protection of the church of the Panaghia which dominates the hill above: the church and the whitewashed road leading to it are visible from all around. The fortress city, or kastro, was built in 1212 by the Venetians and their commander at the time, Marco Sanudo. The village, fortunately forbidden to cars, has kept its medieval character intact. The development of tourism in recent years, which is often limited to the Chora, may have invaded the alleys in summer but fortunately has not yet disfigured the local architecture. You can therefore walk through the alleys of the unfortified village and the kastro itself and imagine the life of yesteryear. The kastro is so well hidden that the entrances are sometimes difficult to find. The village at the gates of the kastro is a tangle of alleys that lead to pleasant squares, often filled with small terraces and cafes. The residents themselves are unable to name all the squares. Pounta Square is certainly the main square. Here you will find tourist information and above all one of the most beautiful views of the sea and the sunset.
