The chora of Serifos is rightly considered one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades, if not the Greek islands. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking Livadi Bay, it seems to tumble down the rock face in an unstable balance. While the climb up can be done on foot from the port, save this panoramic walk for the descent at the end of the day. Once you've arrived in the small capital of Serifos, the town unfolds in a maze of narrow streets, offering magnificent views over the bay. In the upper part, you can still make out the remains of the Venetian fortress, sometimes embedded in the houses. Then climb (yes, climb again...) to the kastro for a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. The upper part of Chora is also home to the 18th-century church of Aghios Athanasios and the neoclassical town hall in the central Pano Piatsa square, ideal for a coffee. It's a must-see and the heart of social life in Serifos. On Pano Piatsa you'll find most of the ouzeries and tavernas where the island's inhabitants gather in the evenings. But the Chora of Serifos is not just impressive in terms of heritage and architecture. What sets it apart from so many other beautiful but abandoned old towns is that it is still largely inhabited and alive, yet has preserved its authenticity. It is difficult to find accommodation here, but not necessarily necessary, as most hotels are just 5 km from the port.
