The island of Delos is an open-air museum, a major archaeological site and sanctuary of ancient Greece. Here, no great temple like Parthenon or cyclopean fortifications: Delos is a wonderful puzzle of ruins that requires an effort of imagination. In winter and on summer evenings, after the last boat has left, the island is only occupied by birds, cats and a dozen guardians who make sure that nobody spends the night there. The winds and the swell sometimes make the trip impossible, even from nearby Mykonos, and Delos is closed to visits from November to March. Like any other major tourist site, Delos is not free: in addition to the entrance ticket (12 €), you have to pay for the boat, which can represent quite a budget for a family. The experience is still unique. To enjoy it in the best conditions, the best time to come is in spring or early autumn, to avoid the heat and the hordes of tourists.
