Built amphitheatrically on a mountain 6 kilometers south of Thira, the houses encircle the medieval fortress of Kasteli. During the Venetian occupation of the island, this became the island's main town. The shady lanes of this village with its many bell towers lead to the top of a small hill from which you can dominate the whole island. The10th-century Theotokaki church houses valuable icons. The small Kasteli café at the top of the village offers refreshments. A few kilometers away, at the top of the mountain, after being closed for more than eighty years, the Profitis Illias monastery is in itself an incentive to come all the way here and can be visited.
