The Akrotiri peninsula, bordered by cliffs carved out of ancient caves, is interesting for the religious buildings it houses and for its few sandy beaches that will allow you to escape the hectic activity of Hania. There are some beautiful small bays (Kalatas and Tersanas for example) and a maze of tarmac roads that you can explore Venizelos and his son Sophocles are buried near the Profitis Ilias chapel, from where there is a magnificent view of Hania. For the Greeks, this is a sacred place where they come on pilgrimage. Two interesting monasteries, that of Agia Triada (1612) and that of Gouverneto are also worth a visit. In the first one, very beautiful with its pink and orange shades, there is an ecclesiastical museum with icons of the Byzantine period painted by Scordilis and a rich library. The second one, Kiras ton Agelon (Sister of the Angels), called Gouverneto, is located further north and is also worth a stop. To the north, Stavros has a pretty sandy beach in a somewhat curious setting. Bordered towards the east by a rocky outcrop which gives it a dramatic atmosphere, it is on this beach that the final scene of Zorba the Greek was shot, a film adaptation of the famous novel by Kazantzakis, directed by Cacoyannis. The beaches of the north-west are the most beautiful of the peninsula but unfortunately suffer from the regular passage of planes: the airport of Chania is nearby. It's a pity but you will be able to go to the beaches of the south-east which are spared. Indeed, the small beaches of Seitan Limani or Marathi are not on the air routes but, as a natural consequence, they are very visited in season and can very quickly be crowded. It is better to be motorized to get there, as the peninsula is only poorly served by buses.
