After being under the rule of the Illyrian tribes and ancient Rome, the island came under the government of the Republic of Venice in 962. Thanks to the trade in wine, salt, fish and olive oil, the Middle Ages and Renaissance under the rule of the City of the Doges were prosperous. Today, the beautifully restored, homogeneous historic center has retained the charm you'd expect from an old maritime town, with Venetian influences in the architecture, pretty squares, a beautiful promenade by the sea, narrow streets with numerous stalls and gallery-workshops (ulica Ljubljanska and Koprska).
