Less touristy than Motovun or Buzet, Oprtalj is well worth a visit. Here, the architecture of the traditional houses is austere and elegant, all stone and tile. You can visit a church and chapels, stroll along narrow cobbled streets, enter boutique-galleries or konobas for a local meal. The name of the famous restaurant comes from the patronymic of Giancarlo Zigante, who in 1999, thanks to his dog, found the enormous Tuber magnatum pico in the forest between Motovun and Oprtalj. At 1.31 kg, the largest white truffle ever found in the world has gone straight into the record books!
