"Daughter of Aquileia and mother of Venice", the city was born from the collapse of Aquileia, when the inhabitants, fleeing the Huns of Attila (452), found refuge there. Insular, lagoon-like, Grado forms a complex archipelago between land, sea, channels, islands and islets. With its fine sandy beach and the quality of its climate, Grado, from 1873, became famous when a Florentine doctor, Giuseppe Barellai, created a "marine hospice" there. The development of Austro-Hungarian tourism followed immediately, investors opened hotels-restaurants, where a wealthy clientele flocked. The small seaside resort, very popular in summer, is still a spa.
