With 3,000 inhabitants, it's a small seaside resort also known for its orthopedic rehabilitation center and asthma treatment. Ankaran, already inhabited in Roman times, saw the establishment of a monastery in the 12th century on the site of today's Hotel Adria. It remained active until the mid-17th century. Under the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the little town became a health resort for naval officers. With a number of beaches, including Debeli Rtic, the town enjoys a pleasant calm that contrasts sharply with the hustle and bustle of most other coastal towns.
