The first important marina in northern Istria, close to the Slovenian and Italian borders, Umag is an outward-looking town of 12,000 inhabitants and well connected since it has a marina, a pier for ferries (connections with Venice in the summer), a bus station (buses to Rijeka, Pula, Poreč, Zagreb, Trieste and Venice) and a railway station (connections with Pula and Slovenia). If the heraldic symbol of Umag remains the lion, the visitors keep in memory the tennis racket that reminds the ATP tournament in July, a kind of Croatian Roland Garros, which distinguishes the city since the 1990s.
