The first important marina in the north of Istria, close to the Slovenian and Italian borders, Umag is an outward-looking town of 12,000 inhabitants and is well connected as it has a marina, a pier for ferries (connections with Venice in the summer), a bus station (buses to Rijeka, Pula, Poreč, Zagreb, Trieste and Venice) and a railway station (connections with Pula and Slovenia). If the heraldic symbol of Umag remains the lion, the visitors keep in memory the tennis racket which reminds the ATP tournament of July, a kind of Croatian Roland-Garros, which distinguishes the city since the 1990s.
