Ponta Ruiva is the name of both a village and a fajã. The fajã has its own microclimate (as is often the case) and therefore a very particular vegetation. A legend tells that in the 16th century, a fisherman was charmed by the song of what he thought was a mermaid. It was not a mermaid, but a beautiful woman with blue eyes and red hair. She was Irish and had escaped from a pirate ship, throwing herself into the sea when she spotted land nearby. The fisherman married her and many children were born, all with blue eyes and red hair ("ruiva" in Portuguese). This is where the name of the village comes from.
