One of the island's oldest communes, Rosais was long considered its cereal granary, such is its fertile soil. This is where the GR02 SJO ends, crossing São Jorge from the east along a long, red dirt road that resembles an African track. It leads to the island's most westerly point, Ponta dos Rosais. The old lighthouse still stands there like a ghost. Take the small path on the left to the former whaling lookout. Situated 200 metres above sea level, you can enjoy an extraordinary view of the whole of the tip of São Jorge and the neighbouring islands of Pico and Faial.
