A quiet fishing village. Try to come in the late afternoon, when the boats come back loaded with nice fish to sell on the pier. The atmosphere is pleasant. The structure of São Mateus is different from the other parishes in the southwest corner of Terceira, with a specific economy associated with fishing and services. The main village, centered on Biscoitinho and the port, includes a dense urban concentration with many roads and cul-de-sacs, characterized by modest houses and fishermen. Towards the west, the agglomeration ends abruptly in Terreiro, limited by the almost under-populated area of Arrife.
