Altares lies along the northern flanks of the Serra de Santa Bárbara massif, stretching from the northern and western edges of the caldera of the Santa Barbara volcano to the cliffs of the island's north coast. Situated on relatively flat terrain with fertile soils, albeit far from the main population centers, the region was settled early, some time before the year 1480. The fertile soils supported the establishment of agriculture and the woad trade. This is an opportunity to stop off at a very good restaurant in the heart of this picturesque hamlet, watched over by a small hill where stands an old whale-spotting lookout post.
