The center of the island boasts some forty caves, some of which are around 100 m deep and over 4 km long. Most are closed to the public for safety reasons, with the exception of Gruta Do Natal and Algar do Carvão. These are not to be missed, provided you are on the island during the periods when they are open to the public. The existence of the cavern has been known for a long time, but its depth and lack of light made any descent difficult. The first descent took place in 1893, the first approximate map of the interior was produced in 1934, and the site was finally opened to the public at the end of the 20th century.
