Before entering the town center, a lookout point, the Miradouro do Navio, offers a lovely view of the north coast as far as Ribeira Grande. In the days of whaling in the Azores, Capelas was an important processing center in the north of São Miguel Island; near the public swimming pools around the port of Poços are the ruins of the mixed-use factory used to process whale oil and milling flour. Today, the town is a popular holiday resort, benefiting from a pleasant microclimate. The curious can visit a small, informal and friendly museum. A number of accommodation and restaurant options are available.
