Located in the center of Martinique, the commune of Le Lamentin covers the island's largest territory. The town's name is a reminder of the manatees - with an a - aquatic animals now extinct on Martinique, hunted by European settlers for their skins. In 1961, Lamentin was the scene of major agricultural strikes and social tragedies, such as the death of three demonstrators killed without warning by the then police commissioner. Today, Fort-de-France's neighbor is one of the island's most dynamic and densely populated communes. This success is due not to its beaches or other tourist attractions, but to its airport (one of the most modern in the Caribbean), its geographical location and, above all, its commercial zones, which make it an essential part of the island's economy.
