Historically, the commune of Saint-François has the distinction of being one of the last bastions of the Amerindian population, gradually pushed back by the colonial movement. This did not prevent European settlers from striking the final blow at the end of the 17thcentury , when they decided to take possession of the area. Overlooking the Atlantic coast and protected by the coral reef, the commune of Le François, once one of the last bastions of the Amerindian population, is today the main stronghold of the Béké community. These white Creoles seek to preserve their aristocratic status, and conduct their business here like chieftains. Saint-François is not lacking in charm, with its famous islets, its white seabed, its beautiful coves, its calm sea, its skiffs, its lively town center and its famous Habitation Clément, a former distillery that has become a center for the interpretation of rum. A small haven of peace that we recommend you access via the road from Le Lamentin, lined with banana plantations and sugarcane fields.
