Legend has it that three small islets (Thébloux, Charles and Sixtain) wanted to get together to celebrate. It was they who gave the town its name, and its destiny is closely linked to that of Joséphine de Beauharnais, who was born here in 1763. Facing Fort-de-France and its bay, with a less hilly relief and less steep coastline than elsewhere, Les Trois-Ilets is made up of three distinct areas with very different atmospheres: the peaceful village where canoes sleep on the small beach lined with old brick buildings, the Pointe-du-Bout and Anse Mitan, a tourist mecca, and, further west, the Anse-à-l'Ane district.
