Perched at an altitude of 450 m, Martinique's highest commune clings to the foothills of Mount Pelée. Red because of its volcanic soil, Morne because it's nestled in the hollow of the mountain, the commune asserted itself as such as early as 1888, when the districts of Saint-Pierre were redesigned. Already the victim of a cyclone, it was not spared by the eruption of 1902. The Maison du volcan (Volcano House) is a reminder of the event and provides information on the volcanic movements on the flanks of La Pelée. Drowned in lush vegetation and surprising flowers, the commune's relief is one of the island's most beautiful landscapes. A quiet village with a supermarket, stores, church and bars.
