Saint-Just-en-Chevalet nestles between the Monts de la Madeleine, the Bois Noirs and the Monts du Forez. The commune has a population of around 1,300 and a number of shops and services. During the Second World War, between 130 and 140 Jews found refuge with 26 families in the village. In 2008, Saint-Just was awarded the title of "Village des Justes" by the association "Hommage aux villages de France". The father of American actor Robert De Niro, Robert De Niro Senior (1922-1993), a painter, sculptor and poet who visited France in the 1960s, came here in search of inspiration and painted a picture entitled Vue de ma fenêtre.
