Ambierle occupies a privileged place in Roannais. The village, established on a promontory at an altitude of 400 m, has a concentric layout around the old claustration buildings. Located halfway between Bourbonnais and Forez and overlooking the plain of Roannais, Ambierle has undeniable tourist attractions. First of all, the visitor is presented with a beautiful group of monuments: ancient fortifications dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, a 14th century priory whose façade was rebuilt in the 18th century, and adjoining the priory, a radiant 15th century church remarkable for the purity of its lines, the high glass roofs of the choir, a shimmering glazed tile roof as well as its centrepiece, a Flemish altarpiece dating from 1466 depicting scenes from the Passion. From the Madonna's platform to the top of the village, one can discover a huge panorama extending across the plain of Roanne to the Monts de la Madeleine du Lyonnais, the Beaujolais and, to the north, to the confines of the Monts du Morvan. At the bottom of La Poste, which leans against a bell tower, a remnant of the former parish church, the street leads to the Alice Tavern Museum. Finally, one cannot leave Ambierle without having tasted a Côte Roannaise (AOC) in one of the cellars offering some of the best vintages of the region.
