From time immemorial, Charlieu's commercial vocation has been based on the city's exceptionally rich heritage. The city centre has attracted many shops with around 100 businesses today, which is probably a kind of record for a city of 3,900 inhabitants. The commercial attractiveness of the city extends over the whole of Charlieu, but also over the south of the Brionnais region, grouping together a catchment area of 27,000 inhabitants. The vast majority of merchants are grouped together in a commercial union called "Ma Boutique", which is often held up as an example for its dynamism. Every year, it organises events that attract a large public, particularly for the end-of-year festivities and, every two years, the "Salon du Bon Vivre", a real showcase for local craftsmanship and commercial know-how.
