The village of Ambierle occupies a privileged place in Roannais. The village, established on a promontory at an altitude of 400 meters, has a concentric plan around the old cloister buildings. Located halfway between Bourbonnais and Forez and dominating the plain of Roannais, Ambierle has undeniable tourist attractions. First of all, it is a beautiful set of monuments that offers itself to the visitor's eyes: old fortifications dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, a 14th century priory whose facade was rebuilt in the 18th century, and, adjacent to the priory, a radiant 15th century church, remarkable for the purity of its lines, the high windows of the choir, a shimmering roof with varnished tiles as well as its masterpiece, a Flemish altarpiece from 1466 retracing the scenes of the Passion. From the platform of the Madonna to the top of the village, one can discover an immense panorama extending beyond the plain of Roanne to the mountains of the Madeleine of the Lyonnais, the Beaujolais and, to the north, to the confines of the Morvan mountains. At the bottom of the post office, which is leaning against a bell tower, a vestige of the old parish church, the street leads to the Alice Taverne museum. This museum bears witness to the hard and solitary work of a woman whose first investigations date back to the 1930s. On the second floor, temporary thematic exhibitions are presented in season. Finally, one cannot leave Ambierle without having tasted a côte-roannaise (AOC) in one of the cellars offering some of the best vintages of the region. Don't hesitate to visit one or even several!
