In the Middle Ages, the town's fortifications and position on a major thoroughfare contributed to its development. In 1759, the construction of the main road to Lyon tore down part of the walls, which were already partially in ruins. Built in the 12th century on the banks of the Besbre river and surrounded by a magnificent garden, the château underwent numerous modifications until the 16th century. It is closely linked to the history of Jacques II de Chabannes La Palice, Marshal of France, and has been inhabited by the same family since 1430. Every two years, the "Grand Embouteillage années 50-60 de Lapalisse" brings together classic car enthusiasts on the N7.
