A small medieval village situated on a rocky spur, Montarcher stands in the heart of the Forez Mountains and Auvergne. With its 75 inhabitants and its 1 162 m altitude, it is the highest municipality of the Loire. Montarcher has a very stated character: its calm, its dominant position, its pastoral environment and its historical past make it a place that gives you a hug if you visit it in relative solitude. This rocky rock housed a detachment of Roman archers which oversaw the intersection of two strategic tracks, a few kilometres south. From here, the name "mount of Archers".
