Founded in 1284 by the seneschal of Beaucaire representing the king of France and by the abbot of Mazan, Villeneuve-de-Berg prospered until the Revolution of 1789 and even held, for a time, the role of administrative and judicial capital of the Bas-Vivarais. The choice of Privas as the prefecture made this village, where Olivier de Serres, the father of sustainable agriculture, was born in 1539, fall into the shadows. The door of the hospital (14th century) with its coat of arms featuring the fleur-de-lis and the crosier of the abbots of Mazan is worth seeing. There is also the house where Olivier de Serres was born and the church of Saint-Louis, where the influence of the abbots of Mazan can be felt
